Song A Day: Country

Friends in Low Places by Garth Brooks

I raised my kids on Garth Brooks. We love his music. This song came on my IPOD this morning as I was getting ready for work. It reminded me of those fun, innocent times when the kids were little. This is my favorite Garth song--I cannot sit still or not sing along when I hear it. Love it!!
Thank you, Garth, for making awesome, fun music!

Song A Day: Preference Proposal

The Preference Dance (girls' choice) at BYU was kind of a big deal, especially when I was a freshman. The thing is, we had to ask in a creative way and usually the guy would respond in an equally creative way. This was part of the fun. Initially I asked this one guy from my Book of Mormon class who I had a crush on. I can't remember the specific way I asked, but he was to answer yes by lighting a candle in his dorm window. Well, I went to his dorm building at the designated time he was to answer, looked up to his window, and saw that there was a lit candle there. I was thrilled. I found out later, though, that he did not want to go to the dance with me but his friends played a joke on me (and him) by lighting the candle in the window. I was devastated. This guy in my ward, Ron Adams, caught wind of what had happened, so he proceeded to "defend my honor" so to speak and chewed out the guys who had been so mean. I thought that was so sweet. My friends convinced me to ask Ron to go with me to the dance instead. He WAS cute and I figured I didn't have much to lose. My friends and roommate and I got together and composed lyrics asking him to go to the dance with me and we set it to the song Don't You Want Me? by the Human League:

"Won't you take me Ronnie?
Won't you take me, ohhhh?"
etc, etc.

It was adorable and we went to his dorm to sing it to him. Now, Ron had a beautiful singing voice, so he responded in the same way, but to a different song--some Lionel Ritchie song--and he sang it solo right outside my window. It was all very romantic! That was it--I was smitten! We ended up dating after that, I wrote to him while he was on his mission, we talked about getting married when he got home....He was home from his mission about 2 weeks and dumped me. It was all pretty tragic--he was the only other guy besides my husband that I truly loved. But when I hear the song Don't You Want Me? it only makes me smile as I remember the events that led up to that "proposal" and the time I spent with him.

Song A Day: 1982

Every Little Thing She Does is Magic by the Police

Spring of 1982, my senior year in high school--this song came on the radio all the time while I was driving myself to our church building for Mutual. This song always takes me back to that time.

Song A Day: Disco

Rock the Boat by Hues Corporation
One of my FAVORITE disco songs is Rock the Boat. This song takes me back to when I was about 12 years old and too young to attend stake dances. However, this one stake dance I went with my dad. He was probably on the stake high council at that time, or a counselor in the bishopric, and we were either setting up for the dance or he was chaperoning. A bunch of teens were there including the kids from my ward who I really looked up to: Marisa and Scott Rogers, the Rittmanic brothers, Keith Waters, Wesley Smith, etc. This song was playing and the kids were rocking out to it. I thought the whole scene was so cool! I couldn't wait to be old enough to attend the dances. Whenever this song comes on now, I can't sit still. I have to dance around and sing along. I love songs that lift me up like that!

A Song a Day

Okay, so I got this brilliant idea yesterday while I was taking my afternoon walk. It was a GORGEOUS day yesterday and my walk was particularly wonderful and exhilerating. I was listening to my IPOD and reflecting on the blog posting I had made about my favorite IPOD song Why. Music is a huge part of my life. I LOVE it--all kinds. There are so many songs that when I hear them they take me back to a sweet or fun memory and I can pinpoint the specific period of time in my life when I would listen to that song. Many songs define different eras of my life. Anyway, I thought it would be fun to do "A Song a Day" on my blog. I'll try to post daily, or somewhat regularly, and just name a song that comes to my mind that day and its particualr meaning or memory.

Today's song is More Than a Feeling by Boston. Boston was huge for me back in junior high and high school. Songs by Boston, and especially this one, make me think of my older brother, Larry. When I hear this song, I see myself hanging out in Larry's room, listening to this album, playing board games--in particular Life. Larry has always been a kind, amazing, older brother! Those are sweet memories!

Favorite

This is my favorite song on my IPOD, and I have close to 1,000. I usually listen to "shuffle" as I'm getting ready for the day. When this song comes on, I literally stop what I'm doing, sit down and get lost in it. It is so melancholy and beautiful. A seriously brilliant song!

Why by Annie Lennox

How many times do I have to try to tell you
That I'm sorry for the things I've done
But when I start to try to tell you
That's when you have to tell me
Hey...this kind of trouble's only just begun
I tell myself too many times
Why don't you ever learn to keep your big mouth shut
That's why it hurts so bad to hear the words
That keep on falling from your mouth
Falling from your mouth
Falling from your mouth
Tell me...
Why
Why
I may be mad
I may be blind
I may be viciously unkind
But I can still read what you're thinking
And I've heard it said too many times
That you'd be better off
Besides...
Why can't you see this boat is sinking
(This boat is sinking this boat is sinking)
Let's go down to the water's edge
And we can cast away those doubts
Some things are better left unsaid
But they still turn me inside out
Turning inside out turning inside out
Tell me...
Why
Tell me...
Why
This is the book I never read
These are the words I never said
This is the path I'll never tread
These are the dreams I'll dream instead
This is the joy that's seldom spread
These are the tears...
The tears we shed
This is the fear
This is the dread
These are the contents of my head
And these are the years that we have spent
And this is what they represent
And this is how I feel
Do you know how I feel?
'Cause I don't think you know how I feel
I don't think you know what I feel
I don't think you know what I feel
You don't know what I feel
